Samsung Galaxy R (GT-I9103)

The Samsung Galaxy R (or the Samsung GT-I9103) is a slightly cut down version of the Galaxy S II, and it's available for sale now in certain European countries.
In Samsung's new naming convention, an "R" handset is a high-end device that comes just below the "S". Made from slightly less expensive components, but still a very desirable smartphone, the Galaxy R has a suggested retail price of €450, but in reality it is likely to sell for closer to €400 when it gets to retailers.

This is a dual-core device with a 1GHz ARM A9 CPU, 4.2" 480 x 800 pixel display, 5 megapixel camera on the back with 720p HD video capture, 1.3 megapixel video calling camera, FM radio and all the usual Android features such as WiFi, 3.5G and GPS. With specifications like this, the Galaxy R is easily more powerful than most rival smartphones apart from ultra high-end handsets.

We suspect that most Mobile Gazette regulars would tend to go for the Galaxy S II rather than the Galaxy R, but there's an interesting twist to this tale.. because right at the moment, Apple effectively has a European-wide injunction blocking the sales of the Samsung Galaxy S II, Galaxy Ace and the original Galaxy S. As far as we know, the Galaxy R is not covered by the injunction.
Originally the Galaxy R was going to have quite a limited release in Europe, but with an obvious gap in their product range it may well be that Samsung will ramp up production. Of course, the Galaxy R is very close in design to the "banned" phones and it may only be a matter of time before Apple try to block this too.

The Galaxy R measures 126 x 67 x 10 mm and weighs 132 grams. The large 1650 mAh battery is quoted as giving nearly 10 hours talktime and 23 days standby time. We're quite pleased to see that Samsung are fitting larger capacity batteries as Android handsets can use a lot of power.
At the moment, countries that appear to be getting the Galaxy R include Russia, Turkey, Norway, Romania and we guess other Nordic and Eastern European countries. It could well be that the Galaxy R will become more widely available given other recent developments.

Razer Announces 'Blade' Gaming Laptop

Razer has finally revealed the product behind its mysterious "PC Gaming is NOT Dead" website, which declared in a rather V for Vendetta tone that on August 26th the company would turn the PC gaming upside down.

At 12 noon EST Razer unveiled its "Blade" gaming notebook, declaring it the "World's first true gaming laptop." The last bit of marketing bait left us a tad puzzled; surely Razer's audience has heard of such manufacturers as Alienware and Voodoo PC. But the machine does look stunning: it has that simple Apple aesthetic with nothing more than Razer's green logo adorning the lid. Its chassis is also made of a dark aluminum material.

The Blade's 17 inch screen display outputs true 1080p HD. For its size, the chassis is relatively light, weighing only 6.9 pounds compared to other 17 inch gaming laptops like the Alienware M17x that weighs in at 9.8 pounds. The Razer Blade is also extremely thin, measuring about .88 inches thick. Part of the reason for its slim form factor is Razer dropped the optical drive, a smart move as most gamers nowadays get their fix from digital retailers like Steam.

The Razer Blade's true popping feature, however, is its user interface. The full-size chiclet keyboard swaps out the usual numeric keypad for 10 dynamic adaptive tactile keys, which gives you easy-access to hot-key commands. There's also an LCD pad underneath it that displays in-game information when you're using an external mouse or switches to a multi-touchpad for navigating.

Inside the chassis, the Razer Blade features a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 2640M processor, 8GB of DDR3 RAM, and an Nvidia GeForce GT 555M (2GB) discrete graphics chip with Optimus technology, which will help extend that 60Wh battery's life span. There's 320GB (7,200rpm) of hard drive space, a bit on the small size. It comes with 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0 (for connecting wireless peripherals), Ethernet port, a USB 3.0 port, two USB 2.0 ports, and 3.5mm headphone and mic combo jack.

The Razer Blade will be available in the fourth quarter of this year, and will be sold for $2,799.99.

Samsung Galaxy S II US Hero

After the tragic news broke yesterday that Verizon would not receive a Samsung Galaxy S II proper, a new image is revealing the look of the three versions of the handset slated to be unveiled on August 29th for the other major US carriers. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint variants of the Galaxy S II are pictured.

Samsung has kept the designs more similar this time around, seemingly avoiding the drastic differences of the US carrier variants of the original Galaxy S. Verizon will very likely receive a handset with almost identical specs with the addition of a 4G ration and possibly a 4.5 inch screen. The carrier is also rumored to be in the running for Samsung built Nexus Prime with Ice Cream Sandwich.

Although they don't look quite as refined, in our opinion, as the international version, the three US variants of the Samsung Galaxy S II still make for quite a handsome bunch. Samsung will introduce the Sprint , AT&T, and T-Mobile-bound handsets at a press event on Monday ; although Verizon has confirmed that it won't be in on the launch, apparently it has a similarly-spec'ed device on the way (perhaps the rumored Galaxy S II LTE refresh) Expect these to start shipping in the middle of next month.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V is almost identical in hardware terms to the existing Xperia Neo, but it comes with a newer version of Android and additional Sony Ericsson software enhancements for a better user experience. The key hardware change is that the Neo V has a 5 megapixel camera where the original Neo has an 8 megapixel unit. It is unusual for a manufacturer to downgrade a phone like this, we suspect though that there might be supply issues with the 8 megapixel sensor either due to the earthquake in Japan and or Apple buying up inventory for the next generation iPhone.

The new version of Android is 2.3.4, a pretty slight update to the version 2.3 in the original Neo. However, Sony Ericsson have improved the camera capture capabilities, video playback options and social networking services plus there is Google Talk with Video Chat (which is perhaps what the "V" stands for). The new version of Android is 2.3.4, a pretty slight update to the version 2.3 in the original Neo. However, Sony Ericsson have improved the camera capture capabilities, video playback options and social networking services plus there is Google Talk with Video Chat (which is perhaps what the "V" stands for).

Hardware differences apart from the camera are extremely slight, with the Neo V coming in different colours (white looks particularly good) and some audio tweaks such as Sony's new xLOUD system.

Just to recap this is a 1GHz device with 512MB of RAM, a 3.7 inch 480 x 854 pixel display, the 5 megapixel camera on the back has with 720p HD video capture, it has GPS, 3.5G, WiFi, microSD expandable memory and Bluetooth. Because this is an Android phone then it also has a web browser, media player and access to thousands of applications in the Android Market.
Sony Ericsson say that they will roll out the 2.3.4 update to ALL 2011 Xperia devices, so don't despair if you have the original Neo, or the Arc, Play, Pro, Mini, Mini Pro, Active or Ray. Updates for these devices should be available from October onwards.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Neo V should be out sometime during Q4 2011 in several colours including white, blue gradient and silver although the press photos also show red and a flower motif. Presumably the Neo V will cost no more than the existing Neo which currently retails at about €300 including tax.

HTC Omega

HTC Omega rumored to be powered by a 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 SoC; likely to be single core, and include 512MB of RAM, the HTC Omega also features a front facing camera, perhaps ushering in the era of Skype integration on WP7 devices for video chat, an upcoming Windows Phone 7 device from HTC . It'll come in a white and silver color combination, perhaps with aluminum construction, and may be called the HTC Radar upon release.

HTC Omega having a 3.8 inch SLCD display and an 8 Megapixels camera on the rear. Expect HTC to announce a second, higher end Windows Phone 7 next week, codenamed the HTC Eternity.  Likely to be announced at the September.

HTC is also said to be preparing a high end Windows Phone handset codenamed Eternity, with a 4.7 inch display. The Eternity will also reportedly have a 1.5 GHz processor, as WMPowerUser pointed out back in May.

Microsoft has provided lots of details on Mango. The OS update, due this fall, is more like an overhaul, with features like multitasking, Internet Explorer 9, speech-to-text, and Facebook messaging integration.

But all's been quiet on the hardware front, at least officially, with the exception of a Fujitsu phone that's launching only in Japan. Nokia is planning to launch a Windows Phone codenamed "Sea Ray" this year, and more hardware is expected from Acer, Samsung, and and LG. HTC has a press event scheduled for September 1, and is rumored to spend the entire time talking about Windows Phone. If that's the case, expect other hardware makers to follow up with their own announcements shortly thereafter.
